Try doing leg stretches just before heading in the water. I had problems with cramping as well and started stretching for about 5-6minutes before the dive and resolved the issue. Another tip is to hydrate before the dive. This can prevent dehydration which can lead to cramps and worse, decompression sickness.

I have to agree with that. Exercise, even if it just regular long walks, can't hurt either.

What would make split fins better in removing cramps? I use Mares Volo and found that all the cramping went away.

Yes, the volo's are also an easier kicking fin - but I prefer the Apollo Bio Fins or the Tusa Zooms to the Volo's. We sell all three, and have sets for people to try in our pool, and 9 out of 10 go for the apollo unless price is a major factor... then the Tusa are a bit cheaper (and come in more colors).

We also do a lot of divemaster classes, and for the timed snorkel swim they have to do, we have had them try them with different fins, and the Apollo's beat out the volo's for better speeds for the folks that tried both.

Nothing wrong with volo - I'd still take them over a conventional paddle - but the efficiency and ease of kick of the splits is amazing. That's why they've topped the rodale tests ever since they came out.
