Question Newby needs help!

My question is actually geared toward snorkeling, but seeing as how just about no one ever posts anything there, I figured it'd be smarter to post it here.

Okay, I'm new to diving and have a question. I can inhale and exhale through my snorkel just fine, but when I exhale, I can't keep from exhaling through my nose a bit too, which fogs up my mask. And I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem and if anyone knows how I could fix it? I just got into diving a couple months ago, so any help offered would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

These is very common with new divers. It is a matter of retraining your breathing pattern. I have some new divers stand and the surface, without the mask on, snorkel in the mouth and breathe in and out. If they are still using the nose, I have them hold there nose and breathe only the through the mouth. It creates a memory pattern for the brain, with the mouth piece in breathe only this way. So far, I have not had a student who is not able to get the breathing down. It does take some people longer. Its not normal to breathe in and out only through the mouth, so it makes sense it will take a little time to teach yourself to do this.

Stand outside in an urban area at midday when it is really cold wearing only T-shirt and shorts...You will catch a cold and then it is really easy to not breathe out through your nose .

with the mask that fogs up, take some normal tooth paste and rub it around on the inside of your mask then wash it out, this can keep your mask from fogging up, there is also different liquids on the market that can be used before heading out to the water.

Clean the mask with toothpaste when new. Most people use commercial anti-fogs or diluted baby shampoo. I use the old tried-and-true: spit. IMHO, it works as well as any of the above, is always handy, and is free.

I have to agree. I've tried a few commercial de-foggers, and am 100% convinced that nothing on the market has worked, or will work, as well as free, easy to produce, always handy, spit.

For some reason, spit doesn't work. I've heard that Johnson and Johnson's baby shampoo works the best. Anywho, to answer your question, I don't think it really matters how you breathe. When you're diving and you descend, you will feel a "mask squeeze" and you will have to breathe out of your nose to get rid of it. So, with some anti fog, I think you should be fine.
