Question Providence?

I'm new to the site and I'm headed up to Providence, Rhode Island in a few days and I was wondering if anybody could give me some ideas on where to look for good dives and what gear I need. Thanks!

Being from the northeast there is one thing I can suggest: bring a drysuit!

Yuh! I went diving in Nova Scotia last summer and learnd that the hard way, 14mm is nice but does not equal a drysuit.

As a living breathing Rhode Islandah, I recommend Fort Wetheral in Jamestown, Kings Beach and Greenbridge in Newport. I personally liked Greenbridge. Its a cove dive avg 15-20 feet deep with 15+ feet of vis. Theres a large rock at the entrance to the cove called the Bull. On the south side of the Bull there is a chute through the rocks about 4 feet wide. If you time it right with the current it will propell you through from about 4 feet to about 20 feet deep to a nice sandy bottom. Lots of lobstah also. As for equipment I suggest a thick wetsuit, 5/7 or 7mm. The water temp ranges from 60-70 degrees this time of year. I usually dive without a hood and stay plenty warm.
Good luck, have a great time in the Ocean State, and dive safe.

Ther are 2 shops in that area. 1. Newport Diving Center, 550 Thames St Newport www.newportdivingcenter.com. 2. Ocean State Scuba, 79 North Rd., Jamestown www.scuyak.com. Both are good and I believe they have charters to local hot spots. Give them a call to see.
Good luck and dive safe.

One other great dive I forgot to mention is the German U Boat off of Block Island. I believe one of the shops I posted earlier runs charters to the site. I have never dove it but keep saying I will. Its in 110 feet of water, visibility depends on current. All kinds of things to look at.
