| There are various options where you can enjoy the red sea, either with a liveaboard, or through daily diving trips.
There are also many destinations on the Red Sea (Sharm, Hurghada, Marsa Alam or even further south) as well as many operators, you can do your homework on the internet.
SCUBA travel covers the Red Sea extensivley as it is the prime Diving destination from Europe. |

| Well worth a trip but its well overdived.
Can see Hammerheads,Oceanic Whitetips,Silky, sharks, lots of Eagle Rays, loads of Blue spotted Rays,Green and Hawksbill turtles, and all the usual suspects.
Some excellent wreck dives as well.
Sudan is better but more expensive. |

If by lively, you mean the nightlife, then Sharm probably has it all on the doorstep. Hurghada has some excellent diving but the nightlife is situated in the old town and can be a bit of a distance, particularly when you have had your "fill" of the nightlife and need to stagger back home!!
Marsa Alam is a fairly newish resort which has opened up further south. The international airport is literally 10 minutes drive away. It allows you to do day dives on some really exceptional reefs: Abu Dabab
This is a collection of reefs which can give you a dive on almost any state of the sea. The sheltered diving it offers makes it a very good venue for night diving. Lots of swim throughs and caves and plenty of sightings for shark lovers. There is also a resident Dugong which makes for a fantastic photo opportunity!! Elphinstone Reef
Quite a famous reef. The sheer walls of this great reef plunge steeply into the blue. Beautiful corals, sponges, gorgonia and fans. The northern end is home to schooling hammerheads and you get frequent sightings of white tips and rays. Shab Samadai - Dolphin House
A beautiful horseshoe shaped reef creating a shallow lagoon where you can often see a large pod of spinner dolphins. Some excellent dives around the outer walls with the western tip of the reef providing a group of pinnacles which rise to the surface.
Again, though, as it is fairly new the nightlife seems to hinge around the hotel and I am sure that how lively it is will depend on who is there livening the place up!
ding mentioned a liveaboard. I have made several trips aboard these and they really do offer some excellent diving. Tony Backhurst is the "rolls royce" of the Red Sea liveaboards but Emperor Divers (book them through Regal Dive) are a very close second. One memorable trip we took was the Northern Wreck Route with Emperor. Fantastic!
Anyway, good luck with your choice and keep us all informed of how the trip went. I am green with envy! |

| I agree with Ding, get on a liveaboard and Tony Backhurst are indeed excellent.
If you don't have sea legs bear in mind Hurghada is a hellhole and Sharm is just a major resort town - no longer the divers' secret it once was, though the Camel bar is still the coolest bar in the Red Sea. You might try Dahab which is very cool and very chilled out (less Egyptian and more Bedouin town) but it's all shore dives or alternately head south to Marsa Alam where you're in dayboat range of some of the Red Sea's best sites like Elphinstone and Fury Shoal. If you do stay north you really should dive the Thistlegorm wreck but it's just so much better on a liveaboard because you'll avoid the crowds of 20-30 dayboats you can get there.
