Default December diving?

My wife and I are looking for good diving and good weather in early December for our anniversary. Considering Honduras - but have heard that's the rainy season. Also heard that it's great if you want all diving all the time. But not much else to do if you want a day of land activities. Welcome info and/or ideas.

Default Honduras in December... wet wet

Dear Minndad,

We went to Roatan (off coast of Honduras) in December of last year for one week. A hurricane was just passing Honduras so water was rough and visibility not great for diving. In fact, we did not even go to one side of island as was too dangerous for dive boat to maneuver!! Overall, we had 4 days of rain and 3 days of beautiful sunny weather. Thus, December is wet in Honduras. So if I haven't discourage you yet, please read on...

Based on several websites and reviews we opted to stay at Anthony's Key Resort, which is an all-inclusive resort. Even with the lousy weather and so-so diving we had a fantastic time. Here are some pointers/comments on stay:

* We choose the key standard accommodations. I highly recommend one of the key room packages, as hill rooms are old and a long, steep, walk, hence the name "hill". Strongly recommend you visit website to take a look-see.

* This resort is geared towards families with children so if you are looking for a romantic, exclusive type feel you may think of somewhere else to stay. However, we found that the kids were most of the time absent and parents were even commenting on how they felt like they came alone. The resort does an excellent job of entertaining the kids so the parents can dive with no worries. By day two, the kids are hand together and the parents all hang together (even at dinner time!)

* Food was good, not five star, but good.

* Range of activities was great, horse back riding on beach!! (and not nose to tail type riding, we're talking galloping and trotting) kayaking, dolphin petting and viewing.

* Resort Staff was very friendly and accommodating

* Resort atmosphere was very outgoing and friendly. By end of week we made very many friends and was never bored, as there was plenty of socializing with other guests. (No TV in rooms so everyone gathers at the club house/main hotel area). Plus staff gives a few party events throughout the week.

* Diving was the biggest disappointment of the trip. Diving equipment, facilities, boat, and staff were all great but sealife was minimal to non-existent. And reefs were badly damaged due to previous storms.

Overall, if the resort hadn't been so great with so many other activities the trip would have been a bust.

Hope this helps!!

Bonaire, Curacao, and Barbados are all south of the hurricane belt. Bonaire is one of the world's premier dive destinations, shore diving is beyond compare. On my one trip there I stayed at the Plaza resort, and it was terrific.
